An organisation has shared five sightseeing recommendations along the Yorkshire Coast for the October half-term.

The family-friendly itinerary was put together by Route YC, which was created by those who live and work on the Yorkshire Coast and is designed to promote the area.

Suggestions include a visit to Whitby Abbey, which, from Thursday, October 24 to Saturday, November 2, will be illuminated every evening.

The Time Will Tell Theatre group will also put on a production, If These Stones Could Talk, at the Abbey, taking spectators into a spooky world of Victorian Gothic.

Route YC also recommends drinking in the awe-inspiring natural rock formations at Flamborough Head, near Bridlington.

Younger family members can take on the challenge of trying to spot the Drinking Dinosaur, and let off steam running or walking on the beautiful beaches nearby.

Bridlington has two award-winning sandy beaches: South Beach and North Beach.

Route YC's third suggestion is North Yorkshire Waterpark, where paddleboarding, ziplining, kayaking, and even peddalo can be enjoyed.

Another name for the Yorkshire Coast is the Dinosaur Coast, on account of the ammonites, belemnites, and devil's toenails (gryphaea) discoverable on its shores.

This makes it perfect for dinosaur-mad youngsters, and Robin Hood's Bay, Route YC's fourth suggestion, is a particularly suitable place to go fossil hunting.

Rounding out the list is the Marine Discovery Centre in Whitby.

The centre plays host to the Whitby Lobster Hatchery, which seeks to conserve the region's lobster stocks and plans to release 100,000 juvenile lobsters back into the wild each year.
