A POLICE wildlife officer has issued a warning after a much-loved pet dog died after being bitten by an adder.
In a post on Facebook, PC CJ Newsome, a Kirklees wildlife crime officer, warned members of the public to be vigilant about the snake when a dog named Finn died after being bitten near a West Yorkshire reservoir.
In the post, PC Newsome wrote: “Sadly, Finn died from a suspected adder bite, leaving his owners absolutely heartbroken and devastated.
“Finn was taken for a walk at Blackmoorfoot Reservoir, Linthwaite, Huddersfield. He was kept on his lead, but allowed in long grass.
“It wasn’t until a few hours after returning home, that his owners noticed that he appeared to be limping for no apparent reason, and his condition deteriorated rapidly, resulting in an emergency trip to the vet. Finn was placed in the ICU, but it was too late to save him.
“Two puncture marks were found on the inside of his leg, consistent with the bite from an adder.
“Finn’s owners are struggling to come to terms with what has happened to their beautiful bouncy boy, who was full of life, and don’t want this to happen to anyone else’s dogs.
“Adders are protected in law, and would much rather have no contact with humans and their pets, but will bite if accidentally walked on or disturbed.”
“If you suspect your dog has been bitten by an adder, please contact your vet asap. An adder bite is not always fatal, but the venom can cause damage to organs if left untreated.
“If you have been bitten by an adder, please seek immediate medical advice.
“Whilst there hasn’t been confirmed sightings or any other problems with adders in this particular area, please be vigilant, keep dogs under close supervision and stick to the paths.
“Signage will be going up shortly to warn members of the public and Yorkshire Water are aware.”
