FORMER mayor of Keighley, George Metcalf, has been honoured for his work in boxing, with the Liverpool native having just been chosen as the new chairman of the Merseyside Former Boxers’ Association
Metcalf is a well know political figure in Keighley, having been a local councillor before becoming mayor, but he is also a huge part of the boxing scene in the town.
Moving to Keighley from Merseyside in 1978, Metcalf was still in the middle of a professional career which took in 20 bouts, 12 wins, and a central area lightweight title in 1981.
But despite his political work in his later years, Metcalf’s love for boxing has never dimmed, and he has trained countless amateurs at both Eastburn Boxing Club and Keighley Boxing Club over the last few decades.
Keighley also has representation on the professional boxing scene, with Ibrahim Nadim’s comeback going well.
After a first professional defeat to Bulgaria’s Tinko Banabakov last March, the Steeton-born super featherweight was inactive for 16 months.
But after beating Cristian Narvaez on points in his return bout at the end of June, Nadim notched his second win of the summer last month.
He outclassed Joshua Ocampo in Leeds to claim another comprehensive points victory, meaning his professional record now stands at 11 wins and one defeat.
