SMASH hit show Mary Poppins will be flying in to Bradford’s Alhambra theatre - the Telegraph & Argus exclusively reveals today.
Following a record-breaking run in London’s West End, where the show received rave reviews and nightly standing ovations, Cameron Mackintosh and Disney Theatrical Group have announced that the Alhambra is one of the venues on the 2024/2025 UK and Ireland tour of the multi award-winning musical.
The much-loved show will be at the Alhambra for a six-week run in summer 2025.
Based on the stories of PL Travers and the Walt Disney film, the musical about the world’s favourite nanny arriving on Cherry Tree Lane is “more magical than ever before, featuring dazzling choreography, incredible effects and unforgettable songs”.
The timeless score includes the classic Sherman Brothers songs Jolly Holiday, Step in Time, Feed the Birds and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, along with new songs and additional music and lyrics by the Olivier award-winning British team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.
The book is by Julian Fellowes and this production is co-created by Cameron Mackintosh. Co-direction and choreography are by Matthew Bourne and direction is by Richard Eyre.
The show will make a welcome return to the Alhambra, where it had a hit run in 2016.
Mary Poppins is the enchanting story of the Banks family, whose lives are changed forever when a rather unusual nanny arrives at their London home in a gust of wind.
The enigmatic Mary Poppins charms the Banks children, Jane and Michael, and when they meet her friend Bert, a Cockney chimney sweep and jack-of-all-trades, they are soon transported into a magical world.
At its heart, the show is the story of a family who are lost. The children are indulged, their father is preoccupied with his demanding job in the City and their mother is struggling to find her identity. When mysterious Mary Poppins takes charge of the chaotic household, she gradually transforms each of their lives.
* Mary Poppins runs at the Alhambra from Wednesday, May 21 to Sunday, June 29, 2025.
