A WATER main has burst in Bradford city centre - causing flooding on the streets.

The incident happened on Bridge Street, in the roadworks area, this morning.

Jonathan Dixon sent the Telegraph & Argus pictures of flooding on the street, which is at the bottom of Sunbridge Road.

In its latest update on the situation, Yorkshire Water said work was ongoing to fix the water main but this was "taking longer than planned".

Mohammed Waqas, owner of nearby City Hair and Beauty, said he was not aware of any flooding-related issues affecting businesses in the area following the burst.

"The water is contained in the roadworks area, there's a barrier," he told the T&A this afternoon.

"There are teams here working on it.

"Hopefully this will be fixed and the water gone soon."

Mr Dixon, who took the pictures, said: "I woke up around 9am and saw I had a text message from Yorkshire Water saying there had been a burst main.

"I then looked out my apartment window to discover the area at the bottom of the road had flooded.

"The last time I saw flooding in central Bradford was in 2011 when the huge water main burst at the top of Girlington and flood water made its way on to Thornton Road up to the old Odeon building.

"Since this doesn't happen every day I grabbed my camera and went to have a look.

"When I got to the end of the road, Yorkshire Water was already on site.

"They were accessing one of the valves in the road, presumably to try and stop the water.

"Another person in a hi-vis Bradford Council coat was moving cones and signs to close off some of the affected area near City Hall.

"There were a few people taking pictures on their phones."

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said early on Sunday morning: "We're investigating a burst in the area.

"We're doing everything we can to get this fixed as soon as possible.

"Thank you for your patience."

The company said people in the BD1, BD3, BD7 and BD8 areas may have low pressure or no water as a result of the incident.

In the latest update at around 10.30am, the spokesperson added: "We're really sorry that customers are still experiencing low water pressure or no water.

"Work is ongoing but the repair is taking longer than planned."
