DISNEY’S dazzling musical Aladdin featured a marvellous night of glitz and glamour when it was performed before a large crowd at Bradford's Alhambra on Thursday night.
The three-week run of Disney’s Aladdin at the theatre will give audiences an unforgettable night of entertainment that is easy on the eye.
Featuring an array of special effects - including a flying carpet taking Aladdin and Jasmine through a shimmering starlit sky - the Broadway and West End hit saw the cast wow the audience with a number of much-loved songs from the 1992 animated film.
Based on the Arabian folk tale Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, Aladdin tells the story of a spirited street urchin being tricked by the evil Jafar into entering a cave filled with jewels and a magic lamp.
Aladdin’s retrieval of the lamp in the Cave of Wonders and the subsequent release of the Genie was a true treat for spectators on the night.
The stage setting for the cave scene was immaculate with golden jewels everywhere, and when Aladdin - played by Kerry Spark on the evening - rubbed the lamp to release the Genie, the audience had to be ready to buckle up.
Special effects saw a smoking entrance for the Genie, played by the brilliant Yeukayi Ushe.
Ushe was a true entertainer, who teased and flirted with the crowd and seemed to really enjoy himself as he sang ‘Friend Like Me’, which featured an eye-catching dance routine that received raucous applause from an appreciative audience.
The first act of the musical was fantastic as the show opened with the song ‘Arabian Nights’, giving the audience a taste of elaborate costumes and excellently choreographed dance routines.
Scenes featuring Jafar, played by Adam Strong, and his sidekick, Iago, played Angelo Paragoso, were delightful.
Strong looked the part of the evil Jafar wearing flowing black robes and carrying a Cobra staff.
Strong’s quirky facial expressions and Paragoso’s humorous antics elicited a number of giggles from the crowd.
Aladdin’s three street ruffian friends, Kassim (Nay-Nay), Omar (Adam Taylor), and Babkak (Nelson Bettencourt) were entertaining throughout, including a brilliantly clever sword-fighting scene featuring the song ‘High Adventure’.
Desmonda Cathabel, who played the independent and spirited Jasmine, showed good on-stage chemistry with Spark.
Their scene on a flying magic carpet hovering above the stage was unforgettable and the pair’s vocals for the song ‘A Whole New World’ melted the hearts of spectators.
