A BRIGHT spark who decided to venture into a male-dominated profession has one piece of advice to other women who might be considering becoming an electrician: press the ‘on’ switch!

Madison Bata, who turns 21 next week, has been an electrician for four years after training at Leeds College Printworks where there was only one other woman on her course.

“Go and do it - because it’s such a heavily male-dominated job,” she advises other women looking for a career.

“Being an electrician opens a lot of doors, and women should have the opportunity to experience it and prove that gender doesn’t define skill or success.

“I think women can be more friendly, and also for older people and for people who have been in domestic violence relationships, they can trust a woman more.

"Women are more comfortable being around women - and so are most people.”

Madison set up her business, Current Electrical, which is based in Greengates but covers Bradford and Leeds. She is enjoying success in her chosen profession, in which an estimated 98 per cent of workers are male.

After work experience in an accountant’s office for a couple of weeks, Madison had her ‘lightbulb moment’ and decided to do the electricians’ course.

“I like to be on the go and be busy and get stuck in,” said Madison.

“I chose to be an electrician because it’s just something that I thought would be different and interesting.

“I love being busy all the time and going to different places and meeting different people.

“I live in Greengates but cover Bradford and Leeds and hope to branch out further as business progresses.”

“I love the fact that it’s hands-on, and I’m constantly busy all the time, meeting new people and their dogs – I love the dogs!”

“It’s a challenge to do the testing and fault diagnosis, but I’m learning with practice.”

Madison finds most of her customers via her Facebook page, Current Electrical.

“My customers always know it’s me on my own because it says so on Facebook that I am a woman, but they say: ‘I am so happy for you, I hope you go really far, it’s so unusual to have a woman’, and things like that. They’re all really rooting for me.

“I had one person who has been a bit weird, but apart from that, nothing else.

“My customers say they are happy with my work, and that I’m really friendly and polite.”
