A COUNCILLOR has said a stabbing - that happened near where thousands of people were enjoying a carnival only last week - is "shocking".

West Yorkshire Police was called to Newlands Way, in the Ravenscliffe estate, Bradford at 3.39pm yesterday after a young man was stabbed in the back with a machete.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said the victim was injured during a fight with another man.

They added: "The victim, a 20-year-old man, received a wound to the back when he was struck with a machete."

He was rushed to hospital with serious injuries that are not life-threatening.

The incident unfolded behind Eccleshill Community Hospital and close to Eccleshill Park.

It has left the local community in shock.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said he'd heard "a load of commotion" and saw around "20 lads walk round the corner most with shirts around their heads as balaclavas".

He said police officers and paramedics arrived quickly at the scene and added: "It’s not ideal my kids play in that park, it just doesn’t feel safe to let them go there anymore."

Councillor Brendan Stubbs (Lib Dem, Eccleshill) said: "It's a park, play area in broad daylight.

"Just last week we had thousands of people enjoying a summer carnival.

"This is not what we want to find on our doorstep."

He added: "This is an area where there are footpaths, parks, the main route to the swimming pool in Ravenscliffe.

"It's well-used.

"It's shocking but hopefully an isolated incident and they'll deal with the people responsible.

"I wouldn't want people to wander round Eccleshill worried about crime."

The councillor said there are "very few incidents" like this in Bradford and Ravenscliffe.

He said: "That's the way we want to keep it.

"Hopefully it's an isolated incident, so I don't want people to worry.

"They are rare incidents, they are horrible when they happen and we don't want to see that kind of thing happen on our streets."

He added: "Carrying knives is always dangerous, carrying knives puts yourselves in danger."

An investigation has been launched and detectives from Bradford District CID are carrying out enquiries into the stabbing.

Police have appealed for information from the public.

Cllr Stubbs said: "I hope the people affected, families, friends, recover and police are able to find who it was."

He added: "If anyone knows anything you need to get in touch with police."
