A TESCO Superstore was forced to close and customers were reportedly "evacuated" after a fire broke out at a building nearby.
The supermarket chain's superstore, in Bradford Road, Brighouse shut for a "brief" time on Wednesday afternoon, as members of the public posted on social media about a huge blaze.
One person shared a picture of a fire engine and a crew parked up on an off-road from the A643, opposite the back of Subway, which is the entrance to a deliveries and collection car park for the Tesco store.
The image showed smoke billowing from a warehouse to the right of the road, with the top edge of the roof heavily charred.
West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS) has since confirmed this occurred in a derelict building on the nearby Clifton Road.
There were suggestions on this post that people were "evacuated" from the Tesco superstore and the Telegraph & Argus understands the fire service advised the shop was closed.
Another post on social media, made at 6.24pm, included a photo that showed a fire service rapid response vehicle at the scene too, while another image captured a second fire engine on the off-road.
One commenter said they witnessed fire engines and a few police cars in the area and added that traffic was slow on Wakefield Road, near Lidl.
One person said at 7.56pm that the situation was all clear at that point.
30 per cent of the building, 20m x 30m, was involved in the fire.
Crews, from Odsal, Rastrick, Cleckheaton, Halifax, and Dewsbury stations, used one aerial and six breathing apparatus along with three hose reels and one large jet to extinguish the fire.
Tesco confirmed in a statement at 8.24pm that its store - which closes at midnight through the week and on Saturdays - had reopened.
A spokesperson for the company said: “Our Brighouse Bradford Road Superstore is now open and ready to welcome customers after a brief closure earlier today (Wednesday 7th August).
"We apologise for the inconvenience.”
