BRADFORD Libraries' Summer Reading Challenge is organising more than 130 free events to encourage children to read throughout the summer holidays.

The central challenge, aimed at four to 12-year-olds, is to read six books throughout the summer.

Children can sign up to participate at any time until September 14.

The initiative aims to tackle the reading 'dip' during the long summer holidays and maintain children's confidence for when they return to school.

Bradford Libraries will host events with authors, illustrators, and creative artists, along with craft workshops and theatre workshops, celebrating this year's Marvellous Makers theme.

Liz Million, known for books including The Great Sheep Shenanigans and Elephant Rides Again, and Kev Sutherland, a comic illustrator who has worked with the Beano and Marvel, will both host events.

Other events include clay workshops, origami, embroidery, iPad drawing, small animal experiences with Lion Learners, and poetry from Sharena Lee-Satti.

Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s executive member for healthy people and places, said: "I would encourage everyone to look at the brochure and check out what is available at their local library and go down and sign up for the summer reading challenge and enjoy the activities."
