COUNCIL bosses have provided an update on major roadworks near a busy roundabout on the edge of Bradford.

Work started at the end of April at the Bradford Road junction which leads on to Chain Bar roundabout.

Kirklees Council and National Highways are working together on what they describe as the "road improvement scheme".

The work includes adding a lane to the carriageway - increasing the number of lanes from two to three - as well as creating a crossing area for pedestrians and the installation of new street lighting.

The project is due to be completed next month as planned.

Councillor Munir Ahmed, Kirklees Council's cabinet member for environment and highways, has now provided an update on the scheme to the Telegraph & Argus.

He said: "Upgrade works at Chain Bar roundabout are now in phase three of the scheme which includes increasing the number of lanes from two to three.

"Development work has also begun for the installation of a new kerb line, pedestrian island and street lighting.

"Due to be completed in September as planned, road users will benefit from improved and more reliable journey times as well as enhanced safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

"We thank everyone for their continued patience and understanding while these improvement works are carried out," he added.

The Council previously warned drivers of disruption as a result of "variations in road closures and traffic management as the development progresses through different stages".

Speaking about the work in April, David Shepherd, strategic director for growth and regeneration at Kirklees Council, said: "We understand that this is a lengthy disruption and with it comes additional congestion, but the upgrade, once complete, will reduce congestion, improve safety and create more reliable journeys, implementing a long-term positive impact on traffic management flow in and around the area.

"I would like to thank everyone in advance who may be affected by the road closures for their patience and understanding while these important works are carried out."

According to a Council spokesperson, the roundabout is an "important and heavily used access route into and out of Kirklees".

"We are creating more opportunities for investment, as well as easier access to more education and employment opportunities," they added.
