THE Bradford Council for Mosques has taken proactive security steps to ensure safety this weekend - amid heightened tensions nationally.

The secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said hundreds of mosques across the country will also be doing so.

It comes as the MCB said it fears some areas - including Leeds, Hull, Liverpool, Glasgow, Lancaster, Blackburn, Newcastle, Birmingham, Sunderland, Dover and Middlesborough - could be targeted.

Meanwhile, South Yorkshire Police said it was aware of a planned protest in Rotherham this weekend.

Immediately after the mosque attack in Southport on Tuesday, the Bradford Council for Mosques issued guidance to its many members.

The organisation urged all mosques to take seven points of action. These were as follows.

  • Enhance Surveillance and Security - Install and ensure all security cameras around the mosque premises are functioning. Arrange for security personnel to be present during prayer times and events.
  • Coordinate with Local Authorities - Establish a direct line of communication with local police. Report any suspicious activity or threats to the police without delay.
  • Increase Vigilance and Awareness - Conduct briefings for mosque staff and congregation members on safety protocols. Encourage the community to be alert and report any unusual behaviour.
  • Control Access to the Mosque - Implement immediate measures to control access, such as monitoring entry and exit points. Consider restricting access to only known community members during high-risk times.
  • Emergency Preparedness - Develop an emergency response plan and ensure all staff and volunteers are familiar with it. Conduct regular drills and reviews of emergency procedures.
  • Strengthen Community Ties - Engage with other faith groups and community organisations to build support networks. Organise interfaith events to promote understanding and unity.
  • Public Communication and Outreach - Issue public statements condemning violence and promoting peace and tolerance. Use social media and other.

Rashad Bokhari, Chief Executive Officer of the Bradford Council for Mosques, said: "The Bradford Council for Mosques is indeed taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and security of our community.

"In light of the heightened tensions and recent incidents, we are actively working with all mosques across the district to conduct thorough security audits.

"These audits are aimed at identifying any potential vulnerabilities and implementing effective measures to better protect our mosques and their congregations.

"Our efforts include ensuring that doors and windows are secure, verifying the functionality of CCTV cameras, and considering the deployment of additional security personnel where necessary.

"We are committed to working closely with local authorities, including West Yorkshire Police, to ensure a visible and reassuring presence in our communities this weekend and beyond.

"The safety of our congregations is our top priority, and we are dedicated to taking all necessary precautions to maintain a secure environment for worship and community activities."
