FIREFIGHTERS remain at the scene of a moorland fire which started earlier this week.

Firefighters were initially called to the blaze off Wessenden Head Road, Meltham, shortly after 10am on Tuesday.

Plumes of smoke from the fire could be seen from parts of Bradford.

The blaze then flared up again yesterday morning.

This morning, a spokesperson from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Five crews - Slaithwaite, Halifax, Skelmanthorpe, Keighley and Todmorden - and two wildfire units remain at the scene.

"This is still an active fire and the public are still being asked to avoid the area."

At noon, the spokesperson said in an update: "The crews all still remain at the scene, with the addition of Ilkley.

"The fire is still burning, but the crews are working hard to tackle it, despite the hot and arduous conditions.

"The public are still being asked to avoid the area."

At this stage, it is not known what caused the fire.
