CAVE rescue volunteers have reminded walkers in the Dales to carry a torch after a man walking on his own became disorientated at Malham Cove late at night.
The team was alerted by police after the 53-year-old man lost his bearings close to the top of the cove at around 11.15pm on Monday.
He had been walking all day and was heading back towards Malham.
A spokesperson for Cave Rescue Organisation said: "Finding himself on very steep ground with only a phone torch, he sensibly remained where he was and rang for assistance.
"Once located, a small team was mobilised and one of our members was able to walk to him relatively easily, escort him back to safe ground and the descent route back to Malham. He was reunited with his friends."
The spokesperson added: "We’re enjoying a bit of summer right now but the light evenings will begin to get shorter from now on and it is always a wise idea to have a good torch with you.
"A small head torch is relatively inexpensive and can sit in the bottom of your bag until you need it - and don’t forget the spare batteries."
