A MAN from Bradford threatened his former partner with a knife in a row over money.
Bradford Crown Court heard that Jean-Lude Chaillie’s relationship with the woman had deteriorated towards the end of their three-and-a-half years together due to his drug and alcohol use.
On August 19, 2022, the couple had an argument over their benefits, which were paid into Chaillie’s bank account. He would normally hand over half to his partner.
However, he failed to transfer the cash as normal that day and said he would only be giving her a smaller amount.
During the argument, he swore at her, picked up a knife, and thrust it towards her face.
Although the blade touched her face the weapon did not injure her but the court heard that she “feared immediate violence”.
She was on the phone to her daughter at the time and urged her to call the police.
Before that incident, Chaillie had kicked the woman in the face causing a cut to her lip and swelling to the right side of her face.
The victim could not recall the date of the attack but said it was sometime between January 21, 2021, and August 18, 2022. She photographed her injuries, which caused an abscess that lasted over a year, and passed the pictures to police.
During two interviews with police Chaillie gave largely “no comment” responses and then denied the assault, having a knife, or raising his voice.
Chaillie, 46, of Heysham Drive, Bradford, initially pleaded not guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault but later pleaded guilty at trial.
In court for sentencing, he spoke via a French-Mauritian interpreter.
His Honour Judge Ahmed Nadim said both incidents would ordinarily attract a custodial sentence but he took note of Chaillie’s previous good character and that he had not committed other offences since.
He sentenced him to a total of 10 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months, imposed a 10pm to 7am curfew for three months, and ordered him to undertake 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days.
Judge Nadim also imposed a five-year restraining order preventing Chaillie from having any contact with the victim.
