AN eye-catching mural has appeared in Bradford city centre as part of a project aimed at brightening up blank walls.
More than 100 residents nominated walls in the Bradford district they wanted to see transformed as part of the BD:Walls initiative.
The scheme officially launched today with the unveiling of an impressive mural on Church Bank painted by internationally-renowned street artist NeSpoon.
NeSpoon is from Poland and her signature style involves intricate lace patterns.
Her piece, just across from Bradford Cathedral, is called The Portal and is a nod to the area's rich textile heritage.
NeSpoon - whose work has appeared in more than 100 cities around the world - said she was "delighted" at the unveiling.
"I've been in Bradford for a week and I've enjoyed learning about the city and its rich textile history, visiting the archives and other places," she told the Telegraph & Argus.
"It took me around three-and-half days to produce The Portal.
"I've drawn on the district's history as a leader of the textile industry and incorporated that into my mural, with my signature lace style."
NeSpoon said she thought Bradford was a "great city" and added: "I really like the stone architecture and there are many friendly people."
As part of BD:Walls, more walls will be transformed by artists later in 2024 and throughout 2025 - City of Culture year - and they will remain in place beyond then.
NeSpoon said: "I'm sure City of Culture will be great for Bradford.
"It's very exciting and I hope to be able to visit for the celebrations next year."
Shanaz Gulzar, creative director of Bradford 2025, said: "BD:Walls is a district-wide project, celebrating our vibrancy and local history.
"This first commission is a welcome addition to Bradford's street art scene and we're looking forward to working with artists and communities to keep transforming corners of our district."
Jenny Harris, director of producing at Bradford 2025, praised NeSpoon's mural.
She said: "I'm really impressed with it - it's beautiful and speaks to Bradford's rich textile heritage.
"It's a privilege to have NeSpoon, an internationally-recognised artist, here with us.
"It's really exciting and an indicator of what's to come with the BD: Walls project and City of Culture."
She added that she was "very excited" about City of Culture.
"I'm a Bradfordian and this special year means a lot to us all," she said.
"It'll be Bradford's time to shine - a chance to show the city off to the world and highlight all its beautiful assets."
