TWO young men have avoided jail for carrying a machete and large Rambo knife on a residential street in Bradford.

Kyle Salim, 20, and Naseem Akram, 24, who both live at the same house in Mitcham Drive, Bradford, were sentenced last Tuesday at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates' Court for possessing a knife blade or sharp-pointed article in a public place.

Salim was also dealt with for possessing a controlled drug of Class B - Cannabis/Cannabis Resin.

They pleaded guilty to their individual offences on the same day.

Both men were caught with knives on Salt Street, less than a mile from their home, on June 30 this year.

Salim was carrying a large Rambo-style knife and Akram a machete, according to court records.

The younger man was also found with a quantity of cannabis.

The court handed the criminals a three-month prison sentence each, suspended for a year.

Court records said a custodial sentence was imposed because of how serious the offences are but both were suspended due to a "real prospect of rehabilitation".

Both men's sentences included a condition to complete up to 20 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days, and the court ordered them to be deprived of their weapons.

Salim must also complete 150 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months.

Akram was given a curfew for 12 weeks, which is being electronically monitored.

He must stay at his house between 7pm and 7am each day, and runs until 11.59pm on October 7.

Both men's guilty pleas were taken into account when sentencing.
