A BRADFORD MP has spoken out after a video emerged appearing to show a man being kicked by a police officer.
Footage shared on social media appeared to show a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer kick and stamp on the head of a man who was lying face down on the floor, with a woman kneeling beside him.
The video, said to have been filmed at Manchester Airport’s terminal two on Tuesday, also appeared to show the officer strike a second man.
Police said three of their officers had been assaulted, including a female PC who suffered a broken nose, and four men were arrested.
GMP today said a police officer had been suspended. The force has also referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for an investigation (IOPC).
Imran Hussain, MP for Bradford East, described the footage as “disturbing” and said he was aware of a “separate but related incident where a number of my constituents who were bystanders recording this assault were themselves subjected to an extreme, excessive and unwarranted use of force”.
"Following these incidents, I have written to the Home Secretary, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, and the Mayor of Greater Manchester to press for an independent investigation into the conduct and actions of the police officers involved, and to support my constituents and their family members,” he added.
Naz Shah, MP for Bradford West, said she was "deeply disturbed and horrified" by the footage.
"It's important a full thorough and immediate investigation takes place," she added.
IOPC regional director Catherine Bates promised a “thorough and robust” independent investigation.
She said: “We appreciate the footage which was shared on social media has attracted widespread shock and concern.
“It is vitally important we investigate all of the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
She said body-worn video and CCTV footage had been secured and the watchdog would be working to provide answers “as quickly as we can”.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said in statement shared on X: “This morning I have spoken to Greater Manchester Police and the Mayor of Greater Manchester about the urgent steps they are taking in response to the incident at Manchester Airport on Tuesday evening, and the video that circulated online yesterday.
“I share the deep concern surrounding the video and understand the widespread distress it will have caused. I welcome the initiation of an independent investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct following a referral from Greater Manchester Police.
“It is extremely important that the IOPC are able to begin the investigation swiftly and conduct it thoroughly, examining all of the evidence, with clear and transparent ways for all those affected to be able to raise their concerns with the IOPC."
