A BRADFORD MP has been elected as one of three deputy speakers to assist Sir Lindsay Hoyle in the House of Commons.

Labour’s Judith Cummins (Bradford South) was a successful candidate alongside Tory former ministers Nusrat Ghani and Caroline Nokes.

A secret ballot to choose between the eight candidates was held on Tuesday.

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay said: “This Parliament is breaking more glass ceilings than ever before, with the biggest number of women MPs ever – and now an all-female team of deputies.

“All three MPs are incredible politicians who are well-respected by this House, and I am looking forward to working with them.”

Ahead of the election, Ms Cummins said: “Every member must be given a voice in this Parliament.

"I am committed to nurturing a positive and inclusive environment, where every member is treated with respect and dignity.”

Sir Lindsay required three new deputies after Dame Eleanor Laing and Dame Rosie Winterton stepped down as MPs ahead of the last election.

They both received peerages in the dissolution honours list announced earlier this month.

Conservative Nigel Evans, who served as a deputy speaker on two separate occasions, lost his Ribble Valley seat at the General Election.
