WORK has begun on the trainshed roof of Huddersfield's Grade I-listed station as part of a significant multi-billion-pound upgrade.
Deemed a rare example of a 'Euston Roof' still operating today, the structure's restoration is one element of the station's redesign which includes additional track, and longer platforms allowing for more trains and increased seating capacity.
The improvements form part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), bringing passengers faster and more reliable trains between Huddersfield, Manchester, Leeds, and York.
Sponsor on the TRU, Gareth Hope, said: "We're delighted at the progress that's being made in Huddersfield.
"This is a key focus point for TRU that will unlock many of the scheme’s benefits."
As a result, the station will be closed on weekends between August 3 and September 1, excluding the bank holiday weekend.
Major projects and TRU director at TransPennine Express, Chris Nutton, said: "To accommodate the major upgrade works, the station will be closed on weekends between Saturday 3 August and Sunday 1 September, excluding the bank holiday weekend.
"While that work is happening, there will be some changes to our services, including diversions on some routes and rail replacement buses on others.
"We’d like to thank customers in advance for their patience and would advise them to check carefully before travelling."
