SEVEN of Great Britain's 10 worst postcode areas for drivers having penalty points on their licences are in West Yorkshire, new research has revealed.
And two of those areas are located in inner-city Bradford, according to a study conducted by accident compensation experts Claims.co.uk.
The research examined GOV.UK data on the number of drivers with penalty points on their licence in each Great British postcode area as of May 2024.
In light of the findings, one Bradford councillor has spoken of his determination to tackle unsafe driving after his area, BD3, was named the third most dangerous hotspot in Great Britain.
Within the area, which includes Leeds Road, 12.56 per cent of all licensed drivers have points, which is 81 per cent above the average in Great Britain.
In total, this is 1,775 out of all licensed drivers, recorded to be 14,135 as of May 2024.
Bradford Moor Ward Councillor Mohammed Shafiq said: "As a councillor for the BD3 area in Bradford, I am encouraged by the strong sense of responsibility and community spirit demonstrated by our residents.
"The recent data indicating BD3 has the third most dangerous driving hotspot in Great Britain with 12.56 per cent of all licensed drivers having points on their licences highlights an area of improvement that we can tackle together.
"I understand that many of the residents are concerned about the high costs of car insurance premiums. Our community commitment to responsible driving is a powerful asset that we can leverage to address the issue by working collectively to improve road safety and reduce traffic violations.
"I am confident that with the continued support and communities working together we can achieve our goal of making BD3 a safer and more affordable place to live.
"Together we can turn this challenge into an opportunity for positive change."
BD8, which is home to Toller Lane, was in ninth place with 12.10 per cent of all licensed drivers have points.
Toller Ward councillor Fozia Shaheen said: "We are working closely with West Yorkshire Police and Bradford Council's road safety team.
"We recognise it is an issue and we are doing work to tackle it like sharing more information about the dangers of dangers driving to young people."
There are five other West Yorkshire postcodes in the top 10.
In second place is LS9, which covers area of Burmantofts, Cross Green, East End Park, Gipton and Harehills. In LS9, 12.74 per cent of all drivers have points, 84 per cent above the national benchmark.
This works out as 2,049 drivers with points out of 16,080 licensed drivers, according to the study.
In fifth place, Leeds’ LS14 is home to 20,720 licensed drivers, 2,585 of which have incurred points.
Therefore, 12.48 per cent of all licensed drivers in the postcode, which includes Seacroft, have been issued points as of May 2022, which works out to be 79 per cent above the average in Great Britain.
WF13, which includes Dewsbury Moor and parts of Heckmondwike, ranks in seventh place, with 12.24 per cent of all drivers having points on their licences.
Leeds’ LS12, including New Farnley and Armley, follows in eighth place, with HX1 in central Halifax the tenth most dangerous postcode for drivers, with 11.97 per cent having points on their licences as of May 2024.
PL3 and PL4, both in Plymouth, were first and sixth respectively in the list of shame.
The list was completed by a slightly surprising entry in fourth place from PA36, which covers the remote village of Bridge of Orchy and surrounding parts of Glen Orchy in Argyll and Bute, Scotland.
A spokesperson for Claims.co.uk has commented on the findings: “Reckless driving endangers lives.
"In fact, there were 133,443 casualties due to road collisions in the year ending June 2023, according to GOV.UK.
"Therefore, drivers must stay aware on the road and follow safety guidelines, including driving with insurance and staying in line with national and regional speed limits, as failing to do so can result in points.
“This campaign has highlighted the most dangerous postcodes for drivers in Great Britain."
