A LOCAL MP whose sister was murdered has described the attack on Donald Trump as “shocking and deeply disturbing and deeply upsetting”.
Kim Leadbeater was recently re-elected to represent Spen Valley - formerly Batley and Spen.
It is eight years since Jo Cox, Ms Leadbeater's sister, was fatally shot and stabbed in her constituency by far-right extremist Thomas Mair on June 16, 2016.
She has spoken before about British politics being in a worse situation now than it was at that time.
Ms Leadbeater told the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg: “I woke up excited to come on your show for the first time to talk about the Labour Government and all our fantastic plans that we have got, and talk about England playing football tonight and then suddenly we see the scenes that we have seen on our TV screens this morning.
“And we are back again having that conversation about what democracy looks like, what our politics looks like.”
She added: “We have got to have that conversation about what a civilised democracy looks like. I have been having it since Jo was killed.
“I sadly feel that we are not making a huge amount of progress in this country and in other countries and we have got to keep having that conversation.”
