Yorkshire has been revealed as the region of the UK where drivers are most likely to have penalty points, as a percentage of the total volume of drivers in the region.

7.8 per cent of motorists in Yorkshire hold penalty points, according to Quotezone.co.uk, with South West England and the East Midlands coming second and third at 6.30 and 6.20 per cent respectively.

Penalty points indicate driver competence, typically given for offences such as speeding, signal violation or phone use while driving.

Greg Wilson, CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, said: "Penalty points are intended to stop motorists from driving dangerously. The more serious the motoring offence, the more points a driver will get.

“It only takes a moment to get distracted or lose concentration but that can’t happen behind the wheel."

Quotezone.co.uk's research also found that a third would consider someone in their family or friend circle a bad driver.
