A MOTORIST has described "terrible driving conditions" on a motorway, as a car crashed into the hard shoulder barrier.

The collision happened on the eastbound carriageway of the M62, at junction 24 (Ainley Top).

West Yorkshire Police was called to the scene at 5.16pm today.

A spokesperson for the force said a vehicle had collided with the hard shoulder barrier and the occupants were rushed to hospital.

It is not believed there are any serious injuries.

One lane was closed while the crash was dealt with, as the vehicle was blocking the first lane slightly.

This caused congestion in the area but traffic was reportedly "coping well" soon after.

A motorway camera showed a police car at the scene, as well as an ambulance, with a car being recovered on the hard shoulder.

The vehicle was recovered within an hour of the crash, according to the police spokesperson.

One motorist, who did not wish to be named, headed home on the westbound carriageway of the M62 earlier this afternoon, when the torrential downpour first started.

He said: "It was awful on the M62 when I was driving back.

"Biblical rain - again - with some surface-water flooding and terrible driving conditions."

National Highways: Yorkshire warned the public this morning on X about the downpour this afternoon and into the evening.

The post said: "Met Office is forecasting summer storms for the region today, up to 9pm.

"Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected which could lead to travel disruption."

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms in Bradford and surrounding areas shortly before this.

It is in place from 11am today until 9pm.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Showers will develop later on Tuesday morning, becoming heavy with some thunderstorms through the afternoon and early evening.

"A few places will see 20 to 30mm of rain in one hour."
