“The country is spoilt for choice: there are over 40,000 lakes in the UK, so there’s something however you wish to spend your day out.

“While the Lake District may be an obvious option, you’ll discover lakes and lochs worth visiting across the British Isles from the Scottish Highlands right down to Cornwall.”

It continued: “There’s often plenty to do around the banks and on the water – though always remember that some of the lakes have rules around entering them, so always check local restrictions (and make sure it's safe to swim if you’re allowed).”

But what makes Malham Tarn stand out from the crowd? Let’s find out.

What makes Malham Tarn one of the UK’s best lakes?

The Independent wrote: “Glacial lake Malham Tarn sits at an altitude of 377 metres above sea level.

“Climb up to the upland alkaline lake – which is one of only eight in Europe – through a farm and moorland.

“The lake is within Malham Tarn National Nature Reserve and is home to aquatic plants, crayfish, teal, coots and more – in fact, it’s also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which gives an even greater level of protection to its precious flora and fauna.

This person also put: “Well worth the walk! This tranquil setting is a beautiful place to relax by the tarn and take in the stunning scenery. Be aware there is cattle and sheep grazing en route, on our visit today, there was a herd of young bulls wandering around and some young calfs with their Mums, they're fine as long as you give them room.

“There are optional routes that follow the Penine way, look out for the signs. Highly recommend the visit.

“If you don't want to walk to the cove there is a car park close by, follow the signs for Malham Tarn if travelling by car up to the tarn.”
