THE memory of a much-loved boy is living on with events that hope to help save young lives.
Jasper Cook, from Birkenshaw, was just eight years old when he tragically passed away suddenly in 2022.
An inquest concluded Jasper, a Birkenshaw Primary School pupil, died from natural causes - but what prompted his death could not be determined.
His loved ones, including his parents Kim and Ian, have since been fundraising to hold cardiac screening events for people aged between 14 and 35. They are doing this through the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity.
Two screening events will take place at Birkenshaw Primary School in July, on what would have been Jasper's graduation from the school.
"We know Jasper's heart stopped - but we don't know the reasons why," Kim told the Telegraph & Argus.
"According to Cardiac Risk in the Young, every week in the UK, at least 12 people aged under 35 die of undiagnosed heart conditions.
"We're not entirely sure that Jasper had anything underlying - but we strongly feel it's important to screen more young hearts to help save more young lives, creating a lasting legacy in Jasper's memory.
"If we can save just one life and prevent another family from going through what we're going through, it would mean so much to us.
"No parent should have to go through the tragedy of losing their child."
The cardiac screening events will take place at Birkenshaw Primary School on July 20 and July 21.
Kim said: "We will hopefully be screening 200 young people over the two days.
"We would like to invite anyone aged between 14 and 35 to have their hearts checked with an ECG funded by donations and carried out through Cardiac Risk in the Young.
"We are desperate to keep Jasper's memory alive."
A Facebook page dedicated to Jasper, with more details about the cardiac screening events and how to book slots, can be found here.
Kim, who has a young daughter called Lily, a toddler called Rowan, and another baby on the way, described Jasper's death as "horrendous".
She paid tribute to her boy, saying: "He was a lovely, gorgeous, friendly, normal little man.
"He was so very precious.
"We miss him all the time and we'll never forget him."
