REFUGEE week will be marked in Bradford by events including film screenings and arts trails.
Every year during national Refugee Week, Bradford district celebrates being a place of welcome for people and recognises the contributions they make to our communities.
For 2024, there are numerous events lined up.
This year, the theme is ‘Our Home’, a reflection of the importance of creating a welcoming and safe environment for everyone.
Bradford Council and various organisations have come together to offer a series of events that aim to raise greater awareness, bring people together and have honest and open discussions to help celebrate our unique diversity.
Events include
• Music workshops with Bradford Friendship Choir on Tuesday June 18
• A Refugee Week Schools Art Trail across Bradford Libraries venues between June 16 -23
• A screening of the film The Sanctuary Seekers of Bradford at the University of Bradford on June 19
• A Peace Meal at Eastwood Primary School in Keighley on June 20
There will also be a Great Get Together event in Peel Park from noon to 3pm on Saturday June 22.
The event will feature free entertainment and attractions.
Many of the attractions are being provided by refugee and migrant community groups.
Noreen Akhtar, Bradford Council’s Assistant Director for Neighbourhoods and Community Services said: "With all the uncertainty around the world, it has never been more important to be a place of welcome and sanctuary. Refugee Week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the successes and contributions of refugees and asylum seekers living in our district."
