More recently, they could be seen forcing entry to the adjoining shop, called La Crepe House, amid fears that the fire has spread. Smoke appears to be emerging from the roof of La Crepe House, said one onlooker.

The incident is causing traffic mayhem, with Leeds Road fully closed and motorists experiencing jams on many streets to the east of the city centre.

The smoke is now hanging over the neighbourhood, with one observer describing the air as polluted by "thick and acrid smoke."
