A CHIPPY almost 130 years old is vying to become the best in Bradford.

The Royal, on Great Horton Road, is one of 10 fish and chip shops locally hoping to win the T&A's Best Chippy 2024 competition.

We asked readers to share which chippy they thought should take the crown and were inundated with responses.

The T&A received 2,237 nominations for the contest through our online voting platform, and we are currently in the process of profiling the finalists in print and online.

One thousand of those nominations were received in just one day, showing just how passionate people in Bradford are about championing the fish and chip shops they think are doing a great job.

Mahmood Rasool, owner of Royal Fish & Chips, agrees that this is the case and was pleased to be named one of the finalists in our competition.

Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus, he said: "A lot of people love fish and chips. It is obviously our number one best seller.

"We started doing chicken six to seven months ago and that has proven really popular too.

"We sell quality food. We make it all fresh.

"It was really good and nice to see us make the top 10 (fish and chip shops in the T&A's Best Chippy 2024 competition).

"Hopefully it will mean more people know about the shop and visit."

According to Mr Rasool, the building has been used as a chippy since 1895.

He is often reminded by older customers of their childhood memories of enjoying the shop down the years.

Mr Rasool added: "This building has been a chippy since 1895. It has always sold Fish & Chips.

"We get older customers who mention that they came here when they were younger.

"I took over the shop in 2020 during Covid and made it new and ready to open for March 2021.

"It has been a real great response since we have opened. It is doing very good.

"A lot of customers have been walking in to grab the food."

We aim to have profiled all of the finalists during the coming days. To vote for your favourite, pick up a copy of the T&A and fill out the coupon.

The overall winner will be announced on Monday, June 24.
