THREE lanes of a motorway had to be closed after a car burst into flames.

National Highways: Yorkshire said at 1.35pm today that lanes one, two, and three (of four) on the westbound carriageway of the M62 were shut due to a vehicle fire.

This was between junction 29 (Lofthouse) and junction 28 (Tingley).

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS) rushed to the scene and tackled the blaze.

Footage seen by the Telegraph & Argus showed a car engulfed in flames, with a thick plume of smoke rising from it into the air.

A spokesperson for National Highways: Yorkshire said: "Traffic Officers are on scene and recovery agents are en route.

"Please allow extra time for your journey as delays are building."

All lanes reopened at 2pm but traffic is still queueing in the area.

The average speed was down to 27 miles per hour at junction 29 and 42mph at junction 30 at around 2.30pm, according to National Highways.
