POLICE have launched an appeal after three hedgehogs were kicked to death in the same area.

West Yorkshire Police's Wildlife & Rural Crime Team said two of the animals were found dead on Asda Field, in Castleford early last week.

The third was discovered on Thornhill Road, in Castleford last Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for the team said the hedgehogs were "kicked to death by unknown suspects".

The team then published a post on its Facebook page this afternoon to share the news a fourth hedgehog had been harmed.

It said: "Unfortunately there has been another incident of suspects kicking a hedgehog causing unnecessary suffering on Asda Field, Castleford."

Hedgehog numbers have dropped drastically in recent years and the species is classed as Vulnerable on the Red List for Britain’s Mammals.

People reacted in horror and disgust on the police team's Facebook page at the alleged crimes.

One person said: "Absolutely sickening."

Another added: "Terrible, poor things."

One commenter said: "Lost for words with this type of behaviour. I feel as human beings we are doomed."
