Where is the best place to picnic in the Yorkshire Dales?

@atingslife Sometimes its nice to get a few miles in before lunch and earn that picnic but sometimes its nice to park the car, walk less than 1/2 a mile and have a beautiful waterfall to relax next to whilst you eat. If you are in the Settle area of the Yorkshire Dales this place is worth a visit for sure. Its a beautiful part of the world with plenty of hikes and waterfalls to explore. This particular one is Stainforth Force. There is a pay and display car park in the village of Stainforth with toilets and then its a short walk over the road, down a bit of a hill and you are there! You can extend this out by walking the path along the river from Settle as well if you want to earn that sandwich! What could be more simple and makes a perfect family picnic spot! Theres so much that we havent explored in the Yorkshire Dales. Really need to head this way more often. If anyone has any Yorkshire Dales top tips please let us know! River Wharfe, Langstrothdale

Muddy Boots Walking Holidays explains: “The River Wharfe forms at tiny Beckermonds in Langstrothdale where a couple of small becks come together.

“Its upper reaches are perfect for easy exploring, with the Dales Way footpath running along one side and a minor road linking Wharfedale to Wensleydale (via Fleet Moss, the highest road in Yorkshire) along the other.

“When the water level is low, as it is for much of summer, the fascinating shapes of the limestone bedrock are clearly visible and make for great scrambling, paddling, fossil spotting and whatever the river version of ‘rock-pooling’ is!”

There are plenty of easy parking spots nearby between Yockenthwaite Farm and Deepdale Bridge where the road is open on both sides.

It’s also been said that this area rarely feels crowded as there's a lot of space for people to spread out.

The summit of Wild Boar Fell

The summit of Wild Boar Fell is another relaxing spot for a picnic in the Yorkshire Dales and a perfect way to reward yourself after a mountain climb.

Muddy Boots Walking Holidays says there is a variety of interesting routes to choose from to gain the summit where you can expect to see views over the western Dales, the Howgills and the Lake District.

The travel website adds: “The huge summit plateau offers several great picnic spots, particularly at ‘the Nab’ or along the ridge at the row of cairns, both of which have stunning views up and down the Mallerstang Valley and further afield.

“If the weather doesn’t work out for you, you can always tuck yourself away for your picnic in the sturdy summit shelter!”

Wainwath Force

Wainwath Force has become a popular picnic spot in recent times and tends to get a little busier than near the River Wharfe and Wild Boar Fell.

However, it is still a “fantastic” place that is “well worth visiting”, assures Muddy Boots Walking Holidays.

“When the river levels are low, the waterfall is split into several different cascades and has a large pool below, perfect for a swim,” adds the travel website.

“The area surrounding and down river of the waterfall is ideal for picnicking with lots of flat, grassy spots and handy rocks to perch on. There are many other waterfalls around Keld to hunt out while you are there!”

Please note BBQs and open fires are not permitted in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and you must always take your rubbish with you.
