A BRADFORD job centre remains closed after flash flooding struck the city at the start of the month.

A worker at Eastbrook Court Jobcentre on Vicar Lane told the Telegraph & Argus the building would be shut to jobseekers' for up to eight weeks while repairs were carried out.

The staff member also raised concerns that workers had been asked to return to the damaged building after initially being allowed to do their jobs from home.

Heavy rain hit the city centre and other parts of the Bradford district on the early-May Bank Holiday Monday.

Images emerged of flooded roads, with the worst-hit streets including Vicar Lane.

The Eastbrook Court Jobcentre worker told the T&A this week: "The building has been deemed unsafe for members of the public..... due to the flooding on Bank Holiday Monday.

"This resulted in the ground floor becoming drenched and caused problems with the electrics in the office.

"Staff have been informed to advise service users that it is expected to remain closed for between six and eight weeks.

"Appointments are currently being conducted by phone."

The worker said there seemed to be an inconsistent approach, whereby members of the public were not using the building, but staff members were.

"There's structural and electrical damage to the building," said the worker, questioning the environment in which workers were operating while repair works take place.

The worker said: "The first day back in the office, the fire alarm was triggered by something overheating due to the works being carried out.

"This has raised anxiety levels among staff."

The Telegraph & Argus put all the staff member's complaints and concerns to the Department for Work and Pensions and asked it it wanted to respond.

However, a spokesperson said no official statement would be issued.

Following the floods, a Bradford Council spokesperson said: "We are assessing the situation which occurred at Vicar Lane with Yorkshire Water, to understand what took place and how we manage this going forward."

In January, the T&A reported on concerns about heating problems at Eastbrook Court Jobcentre.

The Government said temporary heating was supplied at the building and repairs would be carried out.

A jobseeker contacted the T&A to complain about how cold it was at the setting.

The Government apologised for "any discomfort" caused by the situation.
