MIXED views have been expressed on McDonald's plans for a new restaurant in a Bradford district town centre.

As reported by the Telegraph & Argus earlier this week, the fast food chain wants to open a branch on Main Street in Bingley, at the former police station site.

According to McDonald's, the multi-million-pound investment would "transform" the currently vacant site, creating around 120 jobs.

But an online petition has been set up in opposition to the proposals - with a number of concerns raised.

Since the plans were revealed, people have been getting in touch with the Telegraph & Argus to share their opinions.

Paul England said: "I think it's a good idea. It will tidy the area up and bring more employment."

Chris Harris commented: "I doubt it'll impact the traffic or other businesses - most places are shut later on if you want a bite to eat.

"I never eat there but it's better than the wasteland there at present."

Sarah Walton said: "It could be a great employer for local students. Not really had that since Pizza Hut closed."

Mirza Raham said: "I love MacDonald's - it's good in taste and good in price."

Sharon Harrison added: "I'd love a Maccies in Bingley."

However, not everyone was in favour.

Pauline Bilevych said traffic was "already bad enough" in the town and added: "Bingley already has a glut of takeaways and cafes."

Heather Choudhary said: "This is awful news for Bingley, in my view."

Several people said they would prefer something other than a Golden Arches at the site.

Cath Kelly said: "I'd rather have a bank - we have none in Bingley."

Sheila Ognissanti said: "I'd like to see a Primark in Bingley."

Sarah Johnson said: "It's such a shame the space couldn't be better used. What happened to well-needed retirement accommodation?"

Several people said small, independent businesses needed more support in Bingley.

The online petition against the proposals has so far been signed by more than 200 people.

The petition speaks of the importance of preserving Bingley's identity and highlights there are other McDonald's nearby.

A McDonald's spokesperson said: "We are excited about the opportunity to open a new restaurant in Bingley, bringing significant investment to the area and creating up to 120 jobs in the local community."

The company has launched a public consultation seeking residents' views on its plans.

People can have their say at www.mcdonaldsconsultation.co.uk/bingley until May 21.
