A MOTORWAY was closed for around two hours this morning (Monday) after a car overturned in a crash.
The crash happened this morning on the M1 near Junction 40 and the accident has resulted in long delays on the motorway.
In a post earlier on X, formerly Twitter, National Highways: Yorkshire wrote: "Traffic's diverted via the exit/entry slip roads at Junction 40 (near #Wakefield) to leave/re-join the M1 northbound, following a collision/overturned car and oil spill.
"Delays of 30 minutes on the approach, three miles of congestion, back to Junction 39 Durkar.
"West Yorkshire Police are at the scene."
The road has since re-opened and there is still queueing traffic, according to the most recent traffic alert.
The traffic alert reported: "Queueing traffic due to earlier accident on M1 northbound at Junction 40 A638 Wakefield Road (Ossett / Wakefield). Congestion to the A636 (Durkar).
"All lanes have been re-opened after being closed for around two hours."
National Highways: Yorkshire has posted an update on X: "All lanes are now open on the M1 northbound at Junction 40 (near #Wakefield).
"The earlier collision/overturned car and oil spill has now been cleared.
"Delays of less than 10 minutes remain on the approach."
