A BRADFORD city centre store has closed - only 18 months after opening its doors.

International sports shop Lids, located inside a 1,200sq ft unit on Petergate Mall in The Broadway shopping centre, has shut.

The retailer sold baseball caps and jerseys from a host of USA sports teams from the worlds of basketball and baseball, in particular.

Ian Ward, General Manager of The Broadway, confirmed Bradford's Lids store had "ceased trading" and teased what shoppers can expect.

He added: "We’ve a lot of interest from other occupiers and we will be announcing new fashion and beauty retailers in the coming weeks.”

At the time of its opening, September 2022, Lids was undergoing new store rollouts planned throughout Europe - with The Broadway being its 20th UK store.

It offered a huge range of official sports hats and merchandise, including brands such as Nike, New Era, Adidas and Mitchell & Ness.

The sports teams' jerseys were priced between £90 and £245, while baseball caps are available from £18 and £36.

It comes as Marks & Spencer will leave The Broadway in almost a fortnight's time.

In February, the high street giant announced it was planning to shut its branch in the shopping centre.

Last month, the T&A revealed the prominent shop would close on Saturday, May 18.

The store has been in The Broadway shopping centre since it opened in 2015. Before that, it had been on Bradford's Darley Street for many years. 

The business said "shopping habits are changing" and it wanted to make sure "we have the right stores in the right place and with the right space".

It added that it would continue to serve customers at Marks & Spencer branches at Bradford Royal Infirmary, Bingley, and Ilkley - all Simply Food outlets - as well as Owlcotes at Pudsey, and online.

Meanwhile, HMV recently announced it is relocating its store in The Broadway.

The music and entertainment retailer closed its current branch in the shopping centre on April 28.

It is set to reopen next to H&M in The Broadway in the middle of this month.

A spokesperson for HMV described the new branch as a "shiny new shop" and said the move was "exciting". 

The Broadway Bradford has more than 80 retail stores and more than 20 eateries, plus a six-screen boutique cinema.
