FILMING is underway on a Bradford street for the upcoming BBC crime drama, Virdee.
The books, by Bradford author AA Dhand, are being brought to life for the series.
The series follows Detective Harry Virdee, a cop disowned by his Sikh family for marrying Saima, who is Muslim.
Harry struggles with the abandonment and now with his young son, Aaron, growing up and asking questions, thinks it might be time to attempt to reunite with his family.
With his personal life in chaos, he must now hunt down a serial killer targeting the Asian community.
When the murderer kidnaps a local police chief’s son and holds the entire city to ransom, Harry realises that he is going to need the help of his brother-in-law Riaz, a drugs kingpin who runs the largest cartel in the county.
Pulled together in an alliance that could ruin them both, Harry must make a choice: save himself and his family or save his city. He will not be able to do both.
The Bradford riots are being depicted in the series and scenes are being filmed on Peel Park Terrace.
A line producer for Virdee told the T&A: "The riots were an important part of Bradford's history and this scene takes place within it and we have it as part of the show."
Undercliffe resident John Davies said: "I went out for a walk this morning, and to be honest, I thought something bad had happened. I didn't know anything about it.
"Filming this is good for Bradford."
Speaking about the riots, Mr Davies added: "I remember both of the riots. It was scary. It was not a nice thing to see in your city, or for that matter, anywhere."
One excited resident also watched as film crews rehearsed scenes.
She said: "This sort of thing doesn't happen in Bradford.
"I was just taking a walk and saw that there was something going on here."
One resident also recalled the riots and the tensions in the city when they happened.
He said: "I can remember it. I lived on one of the roads where it happened.
"There was a lot of hate and you get the bad and the ugly in everyone.
"It gives a bad name to your city."
One resident who passed by the filming is looking forward to seeing the drama on TV.
He said: "I'll be very tempted to wait and see when it comes out on telly."
Councillor Si Cunningham (Lab, Bolton and Undercliffe) wrote on X "Please be aware the crowd activity and “police” vehicles currently near Idle Road/Peel Park in Undercliffe are part of a BBC film set.
"Local residents have been informed of today’s filming."
