A PLANNED Lidl supermarket in a new Bradford development will be replaced by an Aldi.

Last year a planning application to build a Lidl and drive-thru Costa Coffee on Sticker Lane was approved by Bradford Council.

The application said the plans would create 48 jobs at the currently vacant site.

It would be built on the site of the JCT600 Accident Repair Centre – which would be demolished as part of the proposal.

The company said it would be relocating to a new site, as the Sticker Lane building was “outdated and no longer meets business needs".

Work has yet to begin on the development, but applicants JCT600 (Properties) Ltd recently applied to Bradford Council to amend the approved plans.

The application looked to remove mention of Lidl from the approved plans, as well as changes to the supermarket building.

Documents in the new proposals instead show an Aldi supermarket.

Aldi has confirmed to the Telegraph & Argus that it will be opening a new store on the site and that it will create up to 40 jobs.

A Lidl spokesman said the company was unable to comment.

The T&A contacted the agents behind the application but did not receive a response.

Apart from the change in supermarket brands, much of the originally approved plans remain the same.

The supermarket will have 128 parking spaces, and the new 179 square metre-Costa will have 29 car parking spaces.

There will be a small number of EV charging points, and the developers will pay to upgrade a neighbouring bus stop.

Several trees will also be planted on the site fronting onto Sticker Lane.

When the original application was approved last year, planning officers said: “The site is currently of little merit, underutilised and overgrown in areas and the only building is a generic industrial style building of brick and metal cladding.”

The amendments to the plans to allow Aldi to replace Lidl were approved by Bradford Council last month.

After the approval, an Aldi spokesperson said: “We’re pleased that planning permission to bring an Aldi store to Sticker Lane has been granted and are grateful for the significant local support.

“Once open, the store will create up to 40 jobs and help local people shop and save closer to home.”

Earlier this year Lidl announced it would be closing one of its long-standing Bradford stores.

The Girlington branch - which sat at the junction of Ingleby Road and Duncombe Road -  closed in February.

The same month Lidl announced it had shelved plans to open a store on the Hope Mills site in Keighley.

The company said the site “did not meet its criteria" but that it was looking for other sites in the town.
