THE CURRENT phase of the major city centre roadworks scheme is "progressing well", according to project bosses.

A detailed update has been provided by Balfour Beatty, the contractor delivering the Bradford Walking and Cycling Improvements Scheme in partnership with Bradford Council.

A series of overnight works took place this week around Croft Street Gyratory, as well as Barry Street, Harris Street, John Street, Upper Piccadilly, Bolton Road and Cheapside.

The update states: "These works were completed as planned, and wider works in Bradford City Centre including the demolition of the former NCP car park are progressing well."

The works to demolish the former NCP car park will create a new green space, linking to Hall Ings and Norfolk Gardens.

Here is the current status of works across various streets in the city centre.......

  • Sunbridge Road

What: On Sunbridge Road, works are continuing on both sides of the road to the footpaths and cycle lanes.

Traffic management: The eastbound lane closure on Sunbridge Road, between Barry Street and Godwin Street, will remain in place. Vehicles travelling eastbound are being diverted along Barry Street. Sackville Street will continue to remain closed to through traffic. Vehicles will still be able to access Southgate while the cycle lane works are happening. The temporary traffic signals have been removed and the new permanent ones are now in operation at the Barry St junction.

Why: This work will provide wider footpaths and introduce cycle lanes. Two new bus shelters will also be put in place for bus routes travelling out of the city centre.

  • Westgate and Godwin Street

What: Works are continuing to the new central reservation on Godwin Street between Sunbridge Road and Thornton Road and between Thornton Road and Jacobs Well.

Traffic management: Westgate will continue to be reduced to one lane travelling eastbound to the junction with Godwin Street. Godwin Steet will continue to be reduced to one lane in both directions between Sunbridge Road and Thornton Road.

On Godwin Street, a diversion is in place for southbound traffic wanting to turn right onto Little Horton Lane. Instead, traffic is being re-routed around Jacobs Well roundabout and back along Prince's Way to then make a left turn onto Little Horton Lane. Why: This change will provide more space for bus stops and routes into the city and an additional bus lane on Godwin Street.

Jacobs Well, Prince’s Way and City Park What: At Jacobs Well, works are continuing within and around the roundabout.

Traffic management: There will continue to be lane closures and traffic management around Jacobs Well and the approaches to the roundabout.

Why: This work will see Jacobs Well roundabout become a super crossing.

  • Senior Way, Croft Street and Manchester Road

What: Work is nearing completion on Croft Street and on the northern side of Senior Way and the new lanes are open to traffic. Next week, works to install new signs, traffic signals will be continuing around the Croft Street gyratory and Manchester Road.

Traffic management: Lane closures around the Croft Street gyratory have been removed, but some lanes remain closed or narrowed on Manchester Road and Nelson Street to provide safe walking routes for pedestrians and space for the ongoing works.

Why: The works here are to create an additional lane on the gyratory section of Croft Street in each direction.

  • Lower Kirkgate

What: Works are nearing completion on the northern side of Lower Kirkgate, opposite M&S. Work is ongoing on the southern side of the road adjacent to Broadway Centre to construct a new cycleway and footway.

Traffic management: The taxi rank opposite M&S on Lower Kirkgate is no longer in use and has been permanently removed to make way for a new cycleway. Traffic management has been installed with four-way traffic lights on the section of Lower Kirkgate between the Midland Hotel and the junction with Cheapside, Market Street, and Kirkgate.

There is a temporary signal-controlled pedestrian crossing point in place at the junction of Kirkgate/Lower Kirkgate/Cheapside/Market Street. This is in place to ensure that pedestrians have a safe place to cross the road. Safe pedestrian routes away from the main road and works happening in this area are also in place. Signs are in place to help direct pedestrians along this route and avoid traffic on the main road.

Why: The works here are to widen the junction to Canal Road, to allow for improved cycle lane provision, and build a new bus shelter.

  • Cheapside

What: Works are continuing to install a new pedestrian crossing outside the Midland Hotel and work to install new bus shelters is progressing.

Traffic management: Pedestrian access is being maintained with signs in place.

Why: This work will create a new crossing link into the city centre.

  • Church Bank

What: Work to construct the new road junction on Church Bank is continuing.

Traffic management: There are two-way temporary traffic lights on Church Bank while this work is ongoing.

Why: This work will allow for the new road links in the area.

  • Well Street, Vicar Lane and Hall Ings

What: On Well Street, Vicar Lane, and Hall Ings, the installation of new drainage, kerbs and new carriageway and footways is continuing.

Traffic management: Hall Ings will continue to be reduced to one lane of traffic westbound between the junction with George Street and the junction with Vicar Lane. The road closure on Vicar Lane at the corner Great Cross Street to West Street will also remain in place while this work is being carried out. On Well Street, pedestrian routes are maintained around the works, and diversion signs are in place.

In the coming weeks, there will be some alterations to pedestrian routes on both sides of Hall Ings. The temporary routes will be signed and protected from the works and traffic.

The pedestrian route on the south side of Hall Ings/Leeds Road has now been re-routed between the junction with George Street, to the point on Hall Ings adjacent to the Crown Court building, and instead now passes via West Street (between the Job Centre and Premier Inn). Hall Ings, between Bridge Street and Jacobs Well, is now closed to general traffic. This change is permanent. Click here for more information.

Why: The work on Vicar Lane and Hall Ings will allow for the reconnection of Vicar Lane to Hall Ings, with a new ‘CYCLOPS' junction being introduced.
