MONEY is being raised in memory of a teacher and his two sons who died in the Bradford City fire disaster in 1985.

A collection for the Peter Greenwood Trust Fund will be made before Bradford City's home match with Notts County this Saturday (March 2).

Peter and his two sons, Rupert and Felix, tragically perished in the fire at Valley Parade in May 1985.

The charity raises money to give bursaries to deaf and hearing-impaired students in post-16 education, including many at Hanson Academy and Bradford College.

The charity was set up in memory of Peter, who was a dedicated teacher of deaf children in Bradford.

Peter worked at the former Odsal House and Thorn Park Schools for the Deaf in Heaton.

Michael Pulford, a former colleague and teacher at Thorn Park School, said of Peter: “He was a good man and committed to deaf education.

“He was very well respected, very caring and hardworking.

“He also loved his football. He helped me out when I was coach of a team at Thorn Park.

“He drove the team in the minibus when Thorn Park won the Deaf Schools National Five-A-Side final in 1984.

“The school was in such a state of shock when Peter and his two sons died. The staff and students attended their funeral.”

Mr Pulford, who is also a committee member of the Peter Greenwood Memorial Trust, said the trust aims to provide financial support for people in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community through small cash grants.

The grants help them continue their studies, in secondary, higher, or further education, or, in training institutions.

“This fund goes to deaf students throughout the UK,” he said.

“We started collecting in the late 1980s and Bradford City have been very good with us.

“Last year we raised over £1,000 for the charity, and we’re hoping to make the collection an annual event.

“We’ll have 25 to 30 people collecting outside the turnstiles before the game, many of them former students of Peter’s. They wanted to do this to show their appreciation for Peter.”
