POLICE have branded a recent spate of fire extinguisher thefts from petrol stations as "extremely dangerous" and say it could "put people's lives at risk".
The fire extinguisher thefts have taken place in the Batley and Spen Neighbourhood policing area, which includes Batley, Birkenshaw, Birstall, Cleckheaton, East Bierley, Gomersal, Heckmondwike, Liversedge and surrounding areas.
A spokesperson for the Batley and Spen Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Officers from Batley and Spen Neighbourhood Policing Team are currently investigating reports of thefts of fire extinguishers from petrol stations around the area.
"The theft of extinguishers from any location is extremely dangerous as this leaves locations without the ability to deal with any fire, and therefore puts people’s lives at risk.
"On some occasions, the fire extinguishers have been set off, and again this could cause injury to any person in the vicinity.
"If anyone has any information regarding these thefts, then please can they contact West Yorkshire Police via 101 or Online101, or alternatively reports can be made anonymously via CrimeStoppers."
