A MAN who harassed a woman by turning up at her home and verbally abusing her has been jailed.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Anees Hussain used emotional blackmail, threatened to kill himself, sent unwanted messages, and constantly harassed the victim.

In July 2023 he confronted the victim in a shop and later sent multiple messages calling her “a s**g”.

The 24-year-old then took to turning up at her home at night where he stood at the window and made further comments about her.

On November 28 last year, he went to her home at 3am and let himself in via an unlocked door. She asked him to leave.

Prosecutor Alisha Kaye said: “[He] became verbally abusive and called her names [including] calling her a s**g. The complainant was scared; she was worried that [he] was going to assault her. [He] was pacing up and down.”

He left when the victim threatened to call the police.

When he was arrested Hussain, of Sherwell Rise, Allerton, Bradford, denied stalking and breaching a 10-year restraining order imposed in February 2023. During the rest of the interview, he answered “no comment” to all questions.

The court heard that Hussain, who appeared via video link from HMP Leeds, had previously pleaded guilty to breaching the restraining order.

Miss Kaye said Hussain’s “serious and persistent breaches” of the restraining order had left the victim feeling that she was constantly looking over her shoulder, and that she could not move on with her life.

She said Hussain’s harassment of the victim had caused her “considerable distress”.

Mitigating, Michael Greenhalgh said Hussain had had what he described as “a fairly chaotic lifestyle” but that he had sought treatment whilst in custody to address “the more florid aspects of his cognitive thinking”.

In sentencing Hussain to a total of 27 months in prison – 12 months for three breaches of the restraining order and 15 months activated from a previous two-year suspended sentence – His Honour Judge Colin Burn said his behaviour had been “very disparaging and intimidating” to the victim.

He added that whilst no physical harm had occurred Hussain’s behaviour had cumulatively caused her “concern, harm, and distress”.
