20MPH zones will be introduced at 11 more schools in the Bradford district.
This means that more than 50 schools will be part of Bradford Council's 'Schools 20mph zones' programme.
Schools in Wibsey, Wyke, Great Horton, Buttershaw, Holme Wood, Bierley, Heaton and Denholme are the latest to be included in the scheme.
The scheme forms part of this year’s Safe Roads programme, which aims to protect vulnerable road users including children, pedestrians and cyclists by improving road safety at key locations across the district.
It is also hoped that it will encourage more people to take up walking and cycling.
The 20mph zones try to cover as wide an area surrounding the school as possible to make the journeys to and from school as safe as possible, said Bradford Council.
The plan includes the introduction of 20mph zones on streets around the following schools
• Newhall Park Primary School
• Ryecroft Primary Academy
• Brackenhill Primary School
• Southmere Primary Academy
• St Oswald's C of E Primary Academy
• Worthinghead Primary School
• Buttershaw Business & Enterprise College
• Reevy Hill Primary School
• Wibsey Primary School
• Denholme Primary School
• Heaton St Barnabas' C of E (VA) Primary School
A Bradford Council spokesperson said: "Following a successful recent consultation phase, it is expected that the proposals will be implemented in the spring.
"The programme complements the Council’s ‘Urban Centres 20mph zones’ programme, which has successfully implemented similar schemes in the city centre, Barkerend Road as well as Shipley and most recently, Ilkley."
Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s executive member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: “I’m delighted that we’re about to reach 50 schools that are benefiting from our 20mph zone programme.
"We know that 20mph zones are very effective at protecting our most vulnerable road users, including children, pedestrians and cyclists and as one of the youngest cities, creating a safe environment for our children is crucial.
"Everyone has a right to safe roads and introducing 20mph zones has the potential to bring about a range of health and wellbeing benefits for people in Bradford, particularly children. 20mph zones have not only been shown to save lives but also have a positive impact on people’s physical and mental health.”
