2023 HAS unfortunately been another difficult year for pubs and bars across the country.

It has been no different in Bradford with a raft of venues closing over the last 12 months.

But there have been several openings in the industry for Bradfordians to enjoy.

Here are some of the pubs and bars that have opened or closed across this year.

To start with we lost two mainstays on the pub scene.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

The Black Swan, known to many as The Mucky Duck, closed at the start of April.

Bosses at the Frizinghall Road watering hole said the closure was with "deep regret".

Then before the year was out, a rise in energy bills forced The Wickham Arms Hotel in Cleckheaton to shut after 33 years.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Landlord Stephen Hey said the increase in his electricity from £10,000 to almost £50,000 a year was the reason behind it.

Over in Idle, Jess Taylor and Stacey Pedley took over The Terrace, on Albion Road, and brought back the venue's former name - Symposium Bar & Kitchen.

It officially re-opened in May earlier this year.

Now to the city centre's North Parade where three places have disappeared and there have been two additions.

Ska and northern soul music venue Sally Brown’s decided to shut for good on Saturday, April 29 after it opened in November 2021.

At the time, the bosses of the bar said the area was "so quiet" and they "can’t hang on any longer".

The ReWired Bar, which specialises in Indie music, took its place three months later.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Rewired

Tunes from the likes of Oasis and the Arctic Monkeys are regularly played at the venue.

The Sparrow and Crafted were the other two casualties on the street.

The former became one of the first real ale destinations in the city when it opened over a decade ago.

Its sudden closure in June came as a huge shock to many of our readers.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Crafted

Crafted shut after three years of trading back in September.

The bar and kitchen offered hand-crafted burgers, premium spirits, and world wines and beers.

At the time, bosses thanked customers for their support and said Crafted Bradford was "more than just a business".

The Brass Owl did bring joy to pub-goers when owners Jamie Hill and Laura Wigglesworth brought to life an empty North Parade premises in July.

In other good news for the city centre, Truth took the place of Tokyo on the nightclub scene on Great Horton Road.

The club opened within the historic Windsor Baths in August of this year.

Elsewhere in the district, the Firepit in Bingley shut after six years, while Gilstead pub The Glen reopened in April after it originally closed for good in December 2022.
