TRIBUTES have poured in for a Bradford man who tragically died in a crash just off the M62.
Mason Portman, known to his loved ones under the nicknames MP and Pozzie, died on the morning of Sunday, December 17.
West Yorkshire Police received a report that a black Seat Leon had been found in a ditch near Rishworth, off the A672 Oldham Road, at junction 22 of the M62.
A man found nearby was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.
There has been an outpouring of grief and love for Mason in tributes shared on social media and in the T&A’s online book of condolence.
Described as someone with “the most infectious smile”, news of Mason's death has touched many lives across the district.
Harvey Simmons said: “Rip Mason some boy you was always a smile on your face grooving your shoes off.”
One contributor, named as MC, said: “I fully can’t believe it Pozzi man we had the best of times. You were always there ready to put a smile on everyone's face. My thoughts go out to you and your family. I've lost a true brother. Gone but never ever forgotten.”
Sharon Mitchell said: “Mason was a lovely young man, with the most infectious smile RIP.”
In an anonymous post, one said: “Rest in peace Pozzie. Such a kind lad. Always so nice to me even though you was cheeky. So glad you got to meet our little boy and he got to meet you.”
Simone Hill-Hands said: “Life’s so unfair, his whole life ahead of him, his life as a man was just starting it breaks my heart.
“I send my love and strength to his family at such a sad time and especially at Christmas when families should be together celebrating happy times, RIP Mason keep watching over your loved ones.”
Another said: “Such a shock to everyone last person on this earth I thought it would happen to can’t believe you are gone but you will never be forgotten will miss you so much my boy.”
Samuel Robinson said: “Can’t believe you’re gone, still waiting for you to drive down my street beeping your horn showing your big pearly whites bro. Always had me in stitches, always looking out for me and my family, not a friend but a brother to me. I will miss you so much, love you pal. Forever in our hearts.”
Nicola Fodders shared memories of a young Mason spending time at her house.
“You was never no trouble,” she wrote.
“Always so polite and showed us kindness. We will cherish all them good times. It just doesn’t seem real that you have gone. Mason you were loved by so many people and going to be missed by everyone who’s path you crossed. Sending love and strength to your family.”
Jack Bednarek recalled times spent with Mason as a child.
Sharing a photo of Mason and his friends with bikes, he wrote: “RIP Mason, remembering the memories as kids. Thinking of your family.”
Lauren Byrne said: “Rest in eternal peace Mason. I’ll never forget that night me and Kane was out and you was out all night with us both, having time of your life like you always did when you was out. God only takes the best, RIP mate.”
Maria Kemp added: “If he was like his uncle, then he was an absolutely smashing lad, my deepest sincere thoughts go out to my lovely friend A, and his family at this extremely tragic time.”
Police statement in full
Detectives are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to come forwards.
In a statement released over the weekend, a police spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision just off the M62 near Rishworth.
"Officers were called at 6.15am to a report of a black Seat Leon that had been found in a ditch off the A672 at junction 22 of the M62.
"A man was found nearby who was pronounced deceased by paramedics at the scene.
"The man's family has been informed and will be offered support by specially trained officers.
"The Major Collision Enquiry Team would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it.
"Motorists who were in the area who have dash cams are asked to check them to see if they have captured any part of this incident.
"Anyone with any information that could assist the police investigation is asked to contact the police by using live chat online or by calling 101, quoting log 385 of December 17."
