PRIVATE renters in a Bradford area will pay £1.5m more in extra energy bills this winter putting them among the 25 worst-hit places in the country.
New analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit shows that of the 12,180 privately rented homes in the Bradford West constituency, 8,845 have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or lower.
The 10,630 private tenants in Bradford East are nearly as hard done by, paying an extra £1.4m this winter, leaving them joint-32nd among the constituencies hardest hit in the country.
It was planned that all new tenancies must meet EPC band C by 2025, and the standards would apply to all tenancies by 2028, forcing landlords to upgrade the energy efficiency of their properties and save their tenants hundreds of pounds in energy bills each year.
However, last month Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that “those plans will be scrapped…we’ll never force any household” to install energy efficiency.
