Police have urged anyone living near Thornton Road to close their windows and doors.
There is a huge emergency services presence after a crash near the junction of Hollings Road and Hockney Road on Thursday morning (December 7).
West Yorkshire Police fear the incident may have caused a "possible gas leak".
In the latest update, a police spokesperson said: "We would advise all people living around Thornton Road to close their windows and doors whilst the incident in ongoing."
The fire service has since reported a smell of gas in the area.
People have been warned to avoid the area where possible whilst crews and external agencies work to cap the gas supply off safely.
Drivers have been told to avoid Thornton Road as it is closed both ways from Hockney Road to Hollings Road due to the collision, near the Mercedes garage.
Four of First's bus services - the 607, 615, 616 and 619 - are being diverted.
The alternative bus route will go via Whetley Lane, Whetley Hill, White Abbey Road, City Road and Sunbridge Road, in both directions.
Police have placed a 200-metre cordon in the area, according to the Telegraph & Argus' live traffic and travel page.
