Christmas comes early nowadays, but that wasn’t the case in days gone by.
In this picture, taken in the elegant Swan Arcade on December 2 1959, there isn’t a festive decoration in sight
A couple of smartly-dressed ladies are admiring handbags in Kenvyn’s Umbrellas and Fancy Goods shop.
The picture accompanies a feature in the Telegraph & Argus on Christmas shopping.
‘For the woman who leads a busy social life, nothing could be more suitable than a glamorous evening bag. Buy a sophisticated gold one for 79s lld and match it with pearl decorated gilt earrings,' says the article.
Opened in 1880, the Swan Arcade was a four-storey building located between Market Street and Broadway. Sadly it was demolished in 1962 to make way for modern developments.
