A MAN who stabbed and fatally wounded a man during a confrontation in a street has been jailed for manslaughter.
Kaiden Williams stabbed 29-year-old Peter Wass in the chest during the incident in Hamilton Avenue, Chapeltown, Leeds, which took place shortly after 2.30pm on March 2.
Mr Wass was stabbed three times and received a 22cm deep wound which penetrated his heart.
Members of the public went to his aid and got him into a car to take him to hospital.
They then flagged down an ambulance in nearby Spencer Place and a doctor and paramedics gave him emergency treatment.
He was rushed by ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary but was pronounced dead a short time later.
A murder investigation was subsequently launched by detectives from West Yorkshire Police.
CCTV footage showed Mr Wass had been a passenger in a BMW which had been travelling in convoy in the area with another car.
He then became involved in an altercation in the street with a man who produced a large knife.
A baseball bat was seen next to Mr Wass as he lay injured.
Other footage showed the suspect then running off from the scene.
He was subsequently identified as Kaiden Williams and enquiries were made to arrest him.
Following enquiries, he was traced to a property in Hartlepool and arrested in an operation supported by armed officers from Cleveland Police on March 12.
He was brought back to Leeds and charged with Mr Wass' murder and possession of a knife.
Williams, 22, of Edgware Mount, Harehills, pleaded not guilty to murder - claiming self-defence.
A jury at Leeds Crown Court found him not guilty of murder but convicted him of manslaughter.
Before the trial, he pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon in relation to the knife.
Today at Sheffield Crown Court, he was given a 14-year extended sentence of nine years' custody with five years' extended licence on his release.
Detective Chief Inspector Sam Freeman, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "Although Peter Wass was killed in circumstances which appeared to show he was taking an active part in the confrontation with Williams, no-one deserves to have their life taken from them in such a sudden and violent way.
"The impact that his death has had on his family, including his two children, is just as painful and heartbreaking regardless of any background to the incident, which remains unclear."
