A HOMELESSNESS charity has made the "very difficult decision" to close its Bradford operation.

Emmaus Bradford bosses pointed to the pandemic and "rising operating costs due to the cost-of-living crisis" as reasons behind the closure.

The charity has two shops - one in the city centre and another in Great Horton - and was in the process of opening a community home in Undercliffe.

Work began on converting a former care home,  Pollard House, into the 27-room community home in January of last year.

A post on the charity's website read: "On Monday, October 9, the Emmaus Bradford board of trustees took the very difficult decision to initiate the closure of the Emmaus Bradford charity.

"This heartbreaking decision was carefully considered by all trustees and has been made following an intensive period of review, analysis, and consultation.

"Multiple factors have contributed to the very challenging position we find ourselves in, amongst which the Covid pandemic and rising operating costs due to the cost-of-living crisis have played their part.

"Having exhausted numerous alternative options, unfortunately, the board have reached the conclusion that this is the only viable way forward."

It added: "We are now fully focused on managing the closure of the Emmaus Bradford charity, social enterprise, and community building in an orderly and appropriate manner.

"Our immediate priority is to our people, ensuring our companions find new homes and giving staff the help they need to find new roles.

"Our charity will continue to trade for the next few months, and any funds raised will go towards providing a home and individual support to our remaining companions.

"The Emmaus Bradford board of trustees would like to give sincere thanks to all those who have contributed to our charity."

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council's portfolio holder for regeneration, planning and transport, said: "We’re sorry to hear about the closure of Emmaus Bradford.

"While the Council did not have a direct working relationship with the organisation, we recognise their commitment to working with vulnerable homeless people across the district.

"The Council is committed to ensuring that no one is left without accommodation or support during these challenging times.

"We urge anyone who may find themselves without a place to stay to contact our Housing Options Service. You can reach the Housing Options Service at 01273 435999."
